The song was written by John Pekcy, an eminent English ballad-composer of the latter half of the last century. The song ended with a cloud resting upon the fair fame of sailor Tom; but James Powell added the stanza beginning:
"'Dear Molly,' cried Tom, as he heaved a deep sigh."
Mark Lemon's wife, who was a fine vocalist, used to sing this old favorite of her husband's, while the fire burned bright, and he beat on his chair with his pipe for her sole accom­paniment.
